Cycles

Profiles and Periods

Each profile represents an individual, holding their name, an optional background photo, and logged cycle history. The Profiles tab displays profile cards in your preferred sort order, with each card background dynamically tinted to reflect the person's active phase.

Each card is built around a cycle dial: starting at the top and running clockwise, the dial maps every phase of the current cycle, marks today with a dot, and shows the cycle day in its center. Days before today are solid, days after are pale, and rough-estimate days are dotted. Beside the dial, the card shows the current phase, along with a countdown to the next period and its estimated date.

Tap a card to open the profile. To close it and return to the list, tap the Back button or tap Profiles in the tab bar.

Adding a Profile

On the Profiles tab, tap + in the top-right corner (or Add Your First Profile if your list is empty) to open New Profile:

OptionDescription
NameRequired name or nickname for the profile
Choose Background PhotoSets a custom photo for the avatar and card background, subtly tinted with the current phase color. Tap Remove Background Photo to remove it at any time; without a photo, the avatar shows the name's initial
Typical CycleExpected cycle length (15–60 days; defaults to 28 days)
Typical PeriodExpected period duration (1–20 days; defaults to 5 days)

Typical Cycle and Typical Period are configured under Starting Estimates. The app relies on these values until you have logged enough periods to calculate an actual cycle length, after which forecasts automatically adapt to real trends. Learn more under How Predictions Work.

When you select a background photo, Cycles uses the native iOS photo picker—the app never asks for broader access to your photo library. Photos are resized and re-encoded directly on your device, stripping away location coordinates, camera EXIF details, and other metadata before saving.

You can manage up to five profiles for free. Adding a sixth profile will present the option to unlock Unlimited Profiles. See Profile Limit.

Logging a Period

Open a profile card and tap Log Period:

  • First Day: The start date of the period (cannot be set to a future date)
  • Duration: Length in days (1–20 days). New entries default to the profile's Typical Period
  • Last Day: Automatically calculated based on the selected start date and duration

Only log bleeding days that have already occurred. If a cycle is currently ongoing, log through today; you can return and edit the entry later to extend the duration as needed. An entry cannot be saved if:

  • Any date in the range falls in the future
  • The date range overlaps with an existing period entry for this profile (edit the existing log instead)

The Period History section groups logged periods by year, newest first, with each year's period count beside it. Each row is a period and the cycle it began:

  • The period's dates and length, then the cycle's length (such as “29-day cycle”), or for the cycle under way, the day it has reached
  • Beneath them, the cycle is drawn as a Cycle History bar laid on its side: solid for the period, pale for the rest of the cycle. The cycle under way marks today with a dot and continues in dots to its estimated length. Every bar uses the same scale, so cycle lengths compare down the list; a cycle longer than 60 days fills the row and fades out
  • A finished cycle long enough to suggest a missed log (see Compared with Estimates) shows “A period may be missing from this cycle.” beneath its bar

Tap any row to edit that period. To delete it, tap Delete Period at the bottom of the editor, or touch and hold the row and choose Delete Period.

Cycle History

The Cycle History chart on a profile's screen shows its eight most recent cycles, one bar per cycle: the bar's height represents the cycle length, and its solid base represents the period. The current cycle extends to today and continues in dots to its estimated length; a dashed line marks the cycle length that predictions use.

  • With no cycle selected, the chart shows the Typical Cycle and Typical Period that predictions currently use
  • Tap a cycle to see its start and end dates, its cycle and period lengths, and how many days longer or shorter it ran than the length estimated on its first day
  • Finished cycles mark the length estimated at the time on their bars. Once two cycles can be compared, the chart shows the average difference, such as “Past estimates were off by 1 day on average.”

When only one period has been logged, the chart shows “Log another period to compare cycles.” For how the comparison works, see Compared with Estimates.

Profile Options

Tap the Profile Options menu in the top-right corner of any profile screen:

  • Edit Profile: Update the name, background photo, or starting estimates
  • Pin Profile / Unpin Profile: Pinned profiles display a pin badge and always remain at the top of your list
  • Share Summary: Copy or share a snapshot of this profile's current cycle status. See Share Summary
  • Delete Profile: Permanently removes the profile and all associated period logs. This action is irreversible. When iCloud sync is enabled, the profile is also deleted from your other devices. If the profile syncs to Apple Health, its periods are also removed from Apple Health, and the deletion confirmation says so beforehand

Sorting

Tap the Sort menu on the Profiles tab to organize profiles by:

  • Next Period (default)
  • Next Ovulation Window
  • Name
  • Recently Added

Pinned profiles always stay at the top regardless of which sort order is active. The profile list for the selected date on the calendar, and the Shared Rhythms widget when it shows all profiles, follow this same order.
