LAPLACE Comet surfaces new DMs through system notifications and icon badges, so you never miss a message even when the app window is in the background or minimized
Desktop Notifications
When a new DM arrives and the app window is not focused, the system posts a desktop notification showing the sender's name and a message preview
- Click the notification to bring the app window to the front and jump straight to the matching conversation
- Notifications are posted natively by the operating system and follow its notification styling
Desktop notifications are not triggered when:
- The app window is focused
- The conversation has Do Not Disturb enabled
- The message was sent by the currently signed-in account
On first launch the operating system may ask for notification permission. Allow it in the system dialog, otherwise notifications will not work
Unread Badges
The app updates a system-level badge based on the number of unread DMs:
| Platform | Badge Location |
|---|---|
| macOS | Numeric badge in the top-right corner of the Dock icon |
| Windows | Taskbar icon overlay showing the unread count |
The badge count stays in sync with the total unread conversation messages on the currently signed-in account, and updates automatically after you mark messages as read or switch conversations
Conversations with Do Not Disturb enabled are excluded from the badge unread count
Notes
- Real-time push relies on a persistent WebSocket connection; the app reconnects automatically after a network drop (retrying after 5 seconds by default)
- After you switch accounts, the badge and notifications follow the new account's unread data
